You probably know Next... We have over 500 stores across the UK and an online business that serves customers across 70 countries worldwide.

What you might not know about us… 

  • We have Trainee schemes for graduates! They are 12-18 month programmes designed to give Trainee Buyers and Trainee Merchandisers the on-the-job training they require to integrate within a team as well as an academy style week with our own in-house training team.

  • We take on over 35 graduates every year for our Trainee Buyer scheme and over 35 every year for our Trainee Merchandiser scheme. 

  • We are based in Leicester and have a 19 Bedroom fully furnished Trainee house that opened in February 2018 in Leicester city centre. This is available for all of our Trainee Buyers and Trainee Merchandisers to live in for the first 6 months of their Next journey.

What we look for… 

Trainee Buyers We want graduates that live and breathe fashion or homeware. Whether that’s spending your evenings looking for inspiration on social media or scouring the latest catwalk trends. We want you to love the idea of developing fantastic products with our design teams as you will be doing this daily as our future Buyers. It is important that you can think commercially as well, as the fantastic product needs to sell! If you have a fashion degree this can be a great benefit to draw upon throughout the application process, but this isn’t a requirement.

Trainee Merchandisers It is our Trainee Merchandiser’s job to analyse historical and current sales and make sure that we are buying enough stock of the product that our customers will love. They have to make sure that our deliveries of stock arrive on time so will liaise with suppliers across the globe on a daily basis. Our Trainee Merchandisers come from a variety of courses with Business/Economics courses being the most popular, but it really is a wide net that we cast. 

The Application Process

There are 4 stages to the application process.

  1. Online Questions and Psychometric tests

    Do your research on the role and on Next as a company and the marketplace. TOP TIP Practice psychometric tests, you can find free practice tests online through a Google search.

  2. Video Interview

    We send a link to you and ask you to upload a video of you answering 3 questions. TOP TIP These will be more questions based around the role so be sure to do further research on the role on our website as well as other job profiles that you can find on the web.

  3.  Telephone Interview

    A 30-minute interview over the phone with a Buying or Merchandising Manager based at head office. TOP TIP We will look to test your market awareness and gain further understanding on your knowledge on the role and if you have the skill set to match.

  4. Assessment Centre

    A half-day assessment at Head Office with 4-5 other candidates. We will ask you to participate in several activities including a one-to-one interview and a group activity. TOP TIP: Universities will often put on mock assessment centres, so if you get the chance to go to any, make sure you do as this as it will help with any nerves on the day.


We know that the most successful Trainees start with a great first experience. We also know that it can be daunting joining a big brand like Next, moving to a new city, having to find the right area, a place to live as well as meeting new people. With this in mind, we have introduced this home to ease those initial headaches.

Upper New Walk is our 19 bedroom house for Trainee Buyers and Trainee Merchandisers to rent when they’re initially relocating to begin their Next journey.

This is the best opportunity to settle in quickly and have a straightforward commute and meet plenty of similar career-minded professionals. All of the bedrooms are en-suite, fully furnished with lots of storage space, including the latest fibre optic wifi and a 42 inch TV.

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary for both the Trainee Buyer and Trainee Merchandiser role is £21,653.
